A virtual tape solution consists of a server, disk storage, and software that together provide a buffer or cache between mainframe and/or open systems servers and the tape storage systems. Instead of writing directly to a physical tape drive, mainframe and/or open system workloads read and write to virtual drives created and maintained by the virtual tape solution. When ready, data can then be moved predictably to real tape drives with volume stacking which helps enable full cartridge utilization.
