Green Recycling and Asset Disposition

Server Room

As of July 2008, sixteen states (plus New York City) have passed laws establishing statewide electronic waste recycling programs, with eight other states considering establishing regulations in 2008. From a federal perspective, discussions continue on implementing a federal e-Waste solution. Companies must maintain compliance with those regulations where they have operations – or customers – or risk millions of dollars in fines, lawsuits, remediation costs, negative publicity, and lost customers.

Staying ahead of the curve

It is important to note that federal, state, and local regulations associated with electronic waste (e-Waste) continues to increase, and those that are already in place continue to change. We stay current with all relevant federal, state, and local environmental and data reporting laws and regulations for both the U.S. and internationally to ensure we mitigate the compliance risk by meeting the requirements through strict regulatory compliance and detailed recordkeeping.

Our goal is to ensure that the disposition of your IT assets maintains compliance with all applicable federal, state, and local environmental laws and regulations while still ensuring the protection of stored information to comply with regulations set forth by the Sarbanes-Oxley Act (SOX), Graham-Leach-Bliley Act (GLBA), Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA), and others.

We work closely with approved and certified partners that are specifically identified for their proximity to our customers and their capabilities to handle electronic waste, from both a processing and recycling perspective. Depending upon the type of waste, a partner may be selected for their capability to recycle the assets into raw materials that may be used in the development of new assets; or, for its ability to remarket and resell the asset. The key takeaway is that we ensure that the assets are not deposited into a landfill, especially when some materials may be considered hazardous waste in their current or recycled states.
